25 days of Black Family History: oldest funeral program.

(Originally posted on Facebook February 4, 2026)

I’m going to share my oldest funeral program and an obituary.
The funeral program is of my maternal grandfather. He died when I was about 9 or 10. My earliest experience with death.
He was very special to me and he set the bar for how a man should care for his wife and family.
His impact is still felt to this day. Vince always tease me because I talk about my grandfather like he’s still here.

The obituary is of my paternal grandmother. Her name was Minnie Eva Jackson Scott. She died before I was even thought of. My father was 12 years old when she died.
Over the years, I have been able to reconstruct her family tree with research and most recently through DNA matches that verified the paper research. I have gone back to her great great grandmother who, according to the 1870 US Census, was born in Africa.
