Going to the Chapel

My cousin gave me a gift the other day.
She visited the courthouse in Williamsburg County, SC and thought about me and my ancestor, Willie McGill/Henry Scott.

She sent me a picture of his marriage license to his first wife dated over 103 years ago!

Willie H. McGill married Estelle Scott in 1918 in the Bloomingvale community of Williamsburg County, SC.
This information I knew, but to be able to see the actual document made me so happy.

The document revealed some information I had not thought about in all my research — Willie’s middle initial, “H”.

The story goes that Willie decided he did not want to work on the family farm anymore and simply walked out of his family’s life. He changed his name to Henry Scott and lived as Henry Scott until the day he died.
I wonder if “H” stood for Henry. I heard he took his wife’s maiden name of Scott.
